DC for Youth, Charlie Flanagan is very happy to announce that the International Youth Exchange Program will again take place this year from Sunday, 15th July to Sunday, 22nd July 2018. This year the students are all girls who hail from Finland, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
DC Charlie would like to hear from you if you and your Club are able to host one/or two of the girls during their stay. Ideally, the family hosting the girl/s should have a teenage son and/or daughter who can be involved with the activities planned by your Club during their stay. In return, as the program is modelled around “true Cultural Youth Exchange”, at the end of the year (December/January), our youths will be able to go overseas and be hosted by one of the four families in Europe.
So there will be 2 lots of 2 girls who will get hosted in District 410A and then four South African youths who will be hosted by the four families in Europe at the end of the year.
Leos – this is also a wonderful opportunity for you! Why not be a part of the Youth Exchange Program and if your Club hosts one of the girls, then one of your Leo members will be able to travel overseas at the end of the year!
This way there can be reciprocity and our Youth can also get to experience different counties and cultures.
If you would like to host these young ladies please let DC Charlie know and I can fill you in on all the details of how the various options can work. He can be contacted on Cellular 082 894 3287.
The Lions Boys to Men weekend has now taken place and once again was a huge success. The weekend has inspired people world wide and has received many complementary statements such as:
- Ground breaking
- Exactly what our country needs
- A sorely needed program for our young boys
- Great Youth Development
- and many WOWs!
The Founder of Boys to Men Canada, David Cordes was so inspired that he flew in from Canada at his own expense to staff, mentor and train during the weekend. He also committed to return to Cape Town to attend the next Lions Boys to Men weekend.
Indeed the weekend owes its success to the leadership of DC Charlie Flanagan, who with his leadership team, lead the eighteen young boys through their transformation and enabled them to see their lives light up with hope for a greater and brighter future. It should be mentioned here that five Junior Staff Members were five young boys who attended the Boys to Men program in 2017 and were so inspired that they have returned to transfer their learnings to others!
All too soon the weekend was over. The homecoming event was held at the Lions Club of Tokai’s Clubhouse. Sponsoring Lions, parents, siblings, educators and school principals attended and listened as the boys related their learnings. The invited guests were then allowed to honour the boys.
The report backs have been astounding, from parents, families and educators but most importantly, the boys have a new purpose of hope to be good role models, dream of great visions for them, their community and their country.
This difference was only made possible through the support of sponsoring Clubs and for this we thank you.
A reminder to all Clubs that the Boys to Men Weekend is fast approaching – February 16 – 18.
This year, a top Boys to Men leader from Canada is flying in to South Africa attend the weekend at his own cost.
There are already 12/13 boys committed to attend which leaves just 3 places, so please contact DC Charlie Flanagan as soon as possible should you have a suitable candidate. Don’t miss out on being a part of this incredible project. Part of the project is sponsored by District so the cost to the Clubs is just R1,000 per boy for the entire weekend – a small price to pay to transform the life of a young man in the community.
This year the following Clubs are participating: Tokai, Kirstenbosch, Merrimen, Newlands, Cape of Good Hope,Tableview, Gordon’s Bay and Wellington. Your Club could sponsor too – so call DC Charlie now!
A celebration will be held to welcome the boys home at the end of the weekend. This will be held at the Lions Clubhouse of Tokai’s Clubhouse on Sunday 18th February 2018 at approximately 16h00. Please invite parents of the boys, club members etc. to attend.
