Diabetes Awareness Camp 04 – 05 April 2018

DC Beryl Simpson and her team facilitated a two day Diabetes Awareness Camp from 04 to 05 April 2018 for twenty five children suffering from the disease.  Unfortunately at the last minute seven of these children had to cancel but the remaining eighteen children were certainly treated to two days that they will never forget.

DC Beryl was assisted by DG Geila, 1st VDG Rocky, LP Hilary van Breda and Lion Natalie Abrahams of the Lions Club of Groote Schuur and Lion Sonia Caswell from the Lions Club of Deep South, and well as two Diabetes SA representatives, Carol and Vanessa.

The children who were aged between 12 – 16 years old were treated to two days of beach awareness studies, shell studies, a snake show, mini-Olympics, bird watching, a night hike, concerts etc.  The theme for the camp was Being in Diabetes Denial – Coping with Diabetes.

The children were split into three groups.  Each group had a leader as well as one Lion to guide them. Each group carried a well equipped bag containing a HGT metre, a packet of marie biscuits, sugar free cold drink, fruit and a first aid kit at all times. The children always had their water bottles with them and all had their own blood glucose monitor with them. Before going on any of the excursions, each child would have their blood glucose tested.  Testing took place at 03h00 and 06h00 while the children were sleeping.

At the camp the children met new friends, learnt communication skills and how to develop their social skills.  They were taught how to manage their diabetes away from home and they were also well trained about the signs and symptoms of their illness.  They were taught how to take good care of their health and how to support one another.  The camp also ensured that their leadership skills were enhanced, they gained self confidence and developed a positive behaviour and respect for one another. They also learned how to do things on their own as well as working together as a team.

Well done to DC Beryl and the team – you certainly can be proud of yourselves for yet another successful Lions Project.
