LIONS SERVICES FOR CHILDREN

-We Serve
Children-
TO HELP CHILDREN
TO EMPOWER CHILDREN
TO LEAVE NO CHILD NEGLECTED
Lions Worldwide Symposium Program
for Children - 2008
District 410A received an Expense
assistance grant to host a children’s symposium “Our Youth
–The Future
Generation”. One of 14 Symposiums held worldwide.
The symposium was held at the Simonsberg Primary
School,
9th Avenue,
Kraaifontein on 8
February 2008 from
09:00 to 15:00. The Symposium addressed the awareness, needs,
challenges, education
and support structures. The program was put together with the
assistance of the
local ABBA network (Drug Action Committee Network) consisting of Crime
prevention, clergy, social workers and NGO’s. It was attended by
local and
surrounding community and was estimated that approximately 500 persons
attended. What was even more rewarding and encouraging was that the
community
on hearing of the symposium and knowing that there were social workers,
and
experts in their field in attendance stood waiting outside the school
hall
wanting assistance and counselling.
District Governor Holger Sircoulomb in his opening
address said
that there is a need in the community to supply the youth and their
parents
with the necessary information so that the future leaders can make the
correct
decisions. Vice District Governor Paula Lang said that our children are
very
precious and Lions are committed to making a difference in the lives of
the
youth. Councillor Cynthia Claasen praised Lions for the initiative and
encouraged other organisations to continue to uplift children and
families in
the community.
The focus was on Drugs, whilst other related topics in
the form
of short addresses by experts on the relevant topics. These topics
included
Child crime and drug and alcohol abuse, HIV/Aids, NARCONON (on drugs
and
Alcohol), Fasfacts (Fetal alcohol Syndrome). Also included was Lions
Quest
(life skills education), Support structures available such as After
Care
Support, Toughlove (Parent support), and Childline (Child support).

Children First Lions Club (Non-Traditional Lions
Club)
This topic falls under the heading of Lions Services for
Children and provides you with some basic information on a specialty
Lions
Club, called Children First Clubs. As the name implies, the club
is
focused on Children.
There are only three
Children
First Lions Clubs documented anywhere in Lionism. One club in the UK
and two of these clubs are very active in the USA -Virginia, MD24, the
Middletown Children First Lions Club chartered in April 2003 and the
Portsmouth DAC Center Children First Lions Club chartered in July 2006.
The concept of a
Children
First Lions Club, can lead us to the formation of new Leo and
Traditional Lions Clubs. By exposing young people to Lions and
the
concept of Lionism during Pre-School we are likely to be able to form
Traditional Lions Clubs in elementary schools to foster parent
involvement in education.

The children who have been exposed to Lions in early in their
lives are more
likely to want to form Leo Clubs in Primary and High school and then
Campus
Clubs in college or University. If we start young, teaching
service by
our own example, we instill the idea of service and that idea will last
them a
lifetime.
Their membership is composed of working and retired
members, school staff,
parents and people who simply heard about the concept and wanted to be
a part
of something truly great. Their enthusiasm for helping the
children and
for Lionism is phenomenal. Neither of the clubs has had to draft
people
for a project or for a Club position; there are always willing
volunteers to do
the work. The clubs focus is on projects and participation in
them, not
simply on meeting attendance. They feel that working with the
children is
more important than being able to make every meeting. In fact,
they meet
in mid-afternoon.
These clubs work and are very successful.
The impression that they have on their young people is strong and
profound. Looking back on your own childhood and think of the
memories
that you hold most close. It does not take a major event to have
a major
impact in the life of a child. The simple unselfish act of
reading to a
child for 15 minutes can spark their imagination and create a lifelong
love of
reading, learning and education. Children learn what they
see. Children
live what they learn.
From the movie “Field of Dreams” reference/philosophy:
If you have a mission, they will join!
If you build it, they will come
Model your club to your community needs.
